Large Lot Loophole Closed
In 2008, the Wyoming Legislature passed and the governor signed the Large-Tract Subdivision Bill – closing a major loophole that allowed unregulated 35-acre ranchettes to proliferate. County commissioners now have the authority to plan for and regulate large-tract subdivisions. The bill had bipartisan support and was championed by Governor Freudenthal and Senator John Schiffer. This bill was the priority for Partnership for Wyoming’s Future (PWF) for the 2008 legislative session, and Jim Whalen’s educational work with the Legislature and county commissioners was instrumental in securing passage. PWF will assist county commissioners, through regional workshops and technical assistance, as they consider whether to utilize their new authority. In a poll, eight of Wyoming’s 23 counties have indicated that they will begin to regulate large tract subdivisions within the next year.
