    Geographically focused on the arid West of the U.S. and northern Mexico, the Sonoran Institute engages in collaborative approaches to conservation issues such as growth, energy, climate change, land and water use, and public policy. The Institute works toward a vision of a West with healthy lands, resilient economies and vibrant communities where:

    • civil dialogue and collaboration are hallmarks of decision-making
    • conservation and prosperity go hand-in-hand
    • people and wildlife live in harmony
    • clean water, air and energy are assured

    The Institute collaborates with citizens, officials, organizations and other partners to protect natural and cultural assets and quality of life in their unique landscapes and communities.

    Northern Rockies

    Projects in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and home to the Institute’s Northern Rockies Legacy Program.

    Colorado Rockies

    Projects in Colorado and northern New Mexico and home to our Western Colorado Legacy Program

    Southwest

    Projects in Arizona, southern New Mexico, Nevada and southern California and home to our Sun Corridor Legacy Program.

    Northwest Mexico

    Projects in Baja California, Sonora and home to our Colorado River Delta Legacy Program.

    The Institute’s westwide work supports our regional programs while informing and contributing to conservation efforts across the West.

    Policy Reform

    The Institute promotes initiatives and reforms to give counties, communities and public-land managers tools, authority and funds to better manage growth, ensure sustainable resource use, and protect our natural heritage

    Research & Tools

    Scientists, economists, planners, and other Institute experts and partners develop sound information and analysis to assist decision-makers and citizens and to support the Institute’s work

    Community-based training and follow-up to give local officials and engaged citizens information, skills and tools to successfully lead their communities through growth & change
