An Insight to Water Purifiers
Water purification is the process of removal of sediments, harmful chemicals and containments from the water. The process has stages like filtration, sedimentation, and distillation. There are both biological and chemical processes for water purification. The biological method works with active carbons and slow sand filters, and in the chemical process, UV radiations are used for the process of chlorination and flocculation. The water purifiers do all these heavy processes just for you to drink and use safe and clean water. Next time you see a water purifier, thank it.
Types of Water Purifiers available:
There is a huge variety of water purifiers available in the present day market. Each purifier has different kind of advanced technology to eliminate impurities and harmful bacteria. Here is a simple guide to know your choices:
- Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Purifier:
RO water purifiers use the reverse osmosis technology. In this technology, the water is passed through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure. These remove fluorides, arsenic, mercury and other dissolved impurities. These purifiers give an odor free and clean water.
- Gravity based Purifiers:
The technology used in these purifiers is differentiation in pressure. The water travels from high to low chambers where the filters kill the germs, viruses, and micro-fibres and dissolved salts. These are mainly used for industrial purposes.
- UV Water Filters:
This is one of the newest technologies on the block. It uses ultraviolet refinement technology to clean water. Ultraviolet radiations are used to destroy the bacteria that can cause diseases. It makes water free from viruses causing waterborne diseases like dysentery, typhoid, and cholera. This is an environment-friendly water purifier as to be effective it doesn’t require any chemicals or extra heat.
- Water Ionizers
These water purifiers use electrolysis in which the water is passed over electrically charged plates and then split into two streams. The water has low acidity which helps you to get soft water which is good for your skin.
- Activated Carbon Water purifiers:
Carbon filters are also called pre-filters and remove particles like silt and sediment from water. An activated carbon purifier reduces the chlorine and contaminants present in water making it odorless and pleasant to drink.

Factors to consider before purchasing a water purifier:
You should always consider some factors before putting your money on a water purifier. Those are:
- Water Quality
If your home water is high in TDS, salinity and hardness RO is preferred. In RO purified water is passed through a semi-permeable membrane with pore size of 0.0005 microns under pressure which can even remove tiny pieces of salts and impurities. For soft water and less TDS, activated carbon filters are the choice.
- Water Pressure
If the pressure of incoming water is insufficient, the RO purifier won’t work properly so activated carbon filters will be a good choice. If the TDS is high, then opt for RO purifier and attach a separate unit to increase the pressure.
If bacteria, lead, pesticides, nitrate and other disease causing elements are present in water then opt for a UV based RO filter which will destroy the bacteria with UV radiations. The RO membrane will remove the microbes and contaminants and make it suitable for consumption.
All of the basic things that mentioned at above, you need to know to purchase or just for information on water purifiers and make sure to stay hydrated.
