Southline Transmission Project

Southline Transmission Project Map
Project Description
Southline Transmission project is a proposed 230/345 kV line linking substations near Afton, New Mexico and Tucson, Arizona. It would be divided into two sections:
- New construction: Approximately 240 miles between the Afton substation in New Mexico and the Apache substation in Arizona is planned to become a new 345 kV double-circuit transmission line. This section will enable potential access to the rich renewable resource areas of southern New Mexico.
- Upgrades to existing lines: Approximately 120 miles between the Apache substation and Tucson, Arizona would consist of upgrades to existing single circuit 115kV transmission lines, replacing them with double-circuit 230 kV lines.
The Southline Transmission project is attempting to minimize environmental impacts as much as possible by improving existing transmission lines where feasible and in other locations using existing corridors such as abandoned rail lines. The exact route has not yet been selected.
Status
Southline is currently working through federal, state and local permitting processes. Construction is expected to begin in 2014, with a target in-service date in 2015.
