  • Water Quality

If your home water is high in TDS, salinity and hardness RO is preferred. In RO purified water is passed through a semi-permeable membrane with pore size of 0.0005 microns under pressure which can even remove tiny pieces of salts and impurities. For soft water and less TDS, activated carbon filters are the choice.


  • Water Pressure

If the pressure of incoming water is insufficient, the RO purifier won’t work properly so activated carbon filters will be a good choice. If the TDS is high, then opt for RO purifier and attach a separate unit to increase the pressure.


  • Contamination

If bacteria, lead, pesticides, nitrate and other disease causing elements are present in water then opt for a UV based RO filter which will destroy the bacteria with UV radiations. The RO membrane will remove the microbes and contaminants and make it suitable for consumption.

How Safe is Our Water?

The earth is pretty much covered by water with only less than a third is taken up by land. Back to 100 years ago, or perhaps centuries ago where the Industry Revolution had yet occurred, the Earth was healthy with its clean air, clear water and full of greens. However, as the Earth’s population continues to grow and advanced, being more civillised does not mean we are treating our environment well. More than often, we take the environment for granted and had caused severe pollution the the Earth. Due to greed and inconsideration of humans, pollution has only ever gone worse and had only came to our attention after it had became a serious issue for our future, where the Earth have starting to show signs how human had exceeded the nature’s limits.

Type: Activated Carbon

Pros & Cons:

  • The unique adsorption properties of carbon material can be used to remove impurities in water, also remove unpleasant odor and chlorine.
  • Cannot soften water quality and filter organic chemicals, bacteria

Most suitable for:
Areas where water quality is acceptable, or has little pollution

Cautious point:
Easily breeds bacteria, hence its filters need to have ground cleaning frequently. Filter heart is recommended to be replaced every 3 to 6 months. Filter water bottle is recommended to be replaced every 1 ~ 2 months.

Type: Sodium Ion Resin Exchange

Pros & Cons:

  • Using the nature of ion exchange process, to filter excessive calcium, magnesium and other minerals contained in water.
  • However it cannot remove bacteria

Most suitable for:
Areas where water hardness is too high,

Cautious point:
Due to the ion exchange process, there are high levels of sodium ions in water, which is strongly not recommended for household who have members with cardiac issues.


Type: Reverse Osmosis

Pros & Cons:

  • The semi-permeable membrane is excellent and efficient to remove microorganisms, viruses and bacteria.
  • However the elimination of minerals may cause lack of micronutrients for us to consume daily

Most suitable for:
Areas where water quality is hard or the water metal ion content is too high, areas that have serious water pollution.

Cautious point:
Front filter heart needs to be changed every 3 to 6 months, while the secondary filter needs to be changed every 6 to 8 months, and for the membrane tube needs to be cleaned every three years.

Type: Hollow Fiber Membrane

Pros & Cons:

  • It’s a very fine multi-layer silk membrane filter which can remove particulate impurities such as bacteria and ions.
  • However it cannot remove heavy metals contained in water.

Most suitable for:
General areas that are not polluted. It is not applicable to heavy metal contaminated areas.

Cautious point:
Because of its susceptible to chlorine corrosion filter, it is best to use by combining of activated carbon filter. Filter is recommended to change every six to eight months.


Type: Electrolysis

Pros & Cons:

  • Can only be used to separate acidic water and alkali water, hence have no filtering function and must be used with activated carbon to have filter purposes.
  • Acidic water is more commonly recommended to be used for washing and showering, as it is suggested to have beautifying function.
  • Alkali water is more commonly recommended to be used as drinking water, as it can help balancing our body’s pH value, however it is advisable to drink with caution as pH value that are too high may not be suitable for daily consume, especially for infants.
  • During its process it may produce 50% wasted water that ought to be poured, thus has low efficiency and needs to be charged 24 hours in order to work.


Type: Ozonation

Pro & Cons:

  • Can be used to remove odor, colour and kill bacteria through ozonation
  • However the efficiency would be affected by external factors such as water temperature, concentration of ozone and time of ozone contact with the water.
  • Has low efficiency in filtering organic or non-organic pollutants.
  • Can produce peroxide substance that are harmful and toxic to our body.

Creating “a Civilization to Match the Scenery” in Western North America

It’s not as exciting as restoring a wetland or leading a geotour. It’s not as satisfying as bringing cattlemen, conservationists, commissioners and contractors together to work out a vision for their community. Planning doesn’t generate much adrenaline or many headlines. It does, however, lay the groundwork for all that follows. Last summer the Sonoran Institute began planning for the next five to 10 years by examining the West — its rapid growth, changing economy and much more. By June, we will have a new plan for best using our time, energy, funding, skills and passion for this land. Here’s a sneak preview.


Healthy Lands, Resilient Economies, Vibrant Communities

The goal is a West where civil dialogue and collaboration are hallmarks of decision making; people live in harmony with the land and wildlife; clean water and energy are assured; and vibrant communities, resilient economies and healthy lands reflect “a civilization to match the scenery,” as Western writer Wallace Stegner envisioned. The Sonoran Institute, with the support of people who care about the West, is working to bring this vision to reality.

Changes & Challenges:

A Snapshot Grizzlies. Saguaros. Iconic landscapes — Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone. The West is mythical — a land where many aspire to travel or live, whether in a modern city flanked by rugged wilderness or in a mountain town with world-class skiing or fishing five minutes from work. But profound change is underway. We must be careful stewards of nature’s gifts or risk losing them.

  • Growth. Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado and Utah are the fastest-growing states. Ranches and open space are giving way to subdivisions. Homes and jobs are often far apart, and streets are gridlocked. Many rural communities outgrow their small-town character. Retirees also look south of the border for affordable, resort-style living. Sources of energy and water are strained.
  • Public Land. Nearly half of the West is public land. Neighboring private development hampers wildlife migration. More off-road motorized vehicles damage resources that understaffed agencies cannot protect. Policies impede public-land managers’ work with private landowners, tribes and other jurisdictions, yet most threats arise outside public-land boundaries.
  • Laws & Policies. State and federal policies offer few incentives and limited authority for communities to plan for growth and protect their land, air and water. Poorly planned development decreases property values and increases costs of infrastructure and services.
  • Energy. Parts of the West are in the grip of an energy boom. When bust follows boom, communities have to pick up the pieces. Many are unprepared for the impacts on their land, water and social fabric.
  • Drought. Compounding these challenges, a prolonged drought is evidenced by reduced mountain snow pack, falling river levels, intense wildfires and expanding noxious weeds.
  • Changing Economy. Traditional industries no longer make a major contribution. Scenery, recreation and open space are the West’s new competitive advantage.

The challenges loom large, but they can be overcome. We can make better decisions about how to develop our communities and preserve the places and quality of life we cherish.

How to Choose the Best Water Filter for your Household

Our earth is no longer healthy and we cannot just drink or use water directly from the pond, lakeside or the river nearby us in the wild. As the water we have now is already polluted due to industrialization and irresponsible care from humans. Community “Energized” After Institute Visit

This e-mail arrived after the Sonoran Institute’s Marjo Curgus visited Greenough, Montana, in February to help residents create a vision for their community.

Thank you, Sonoran Institute!! A quick note to thank you so much for sending Marjo to Greenough this past Saturday! Our little community (about 160) is spread out over 120 square miles around the confluence of the Blackfoot and Clearwater rivers in Missoula County and, as you can imagine, represents a wide range of personalities/wealth/nonwealth/ideas/experiences. She allowed for us to finally come together for some much-needed, constructive dialog.

I can’t tell you how much animosity and distrust she cut through – for almost six weeks prior there were people who were vehemently opposed to the Sonoran Institute facilitating in Greenough (just some wacko-enviro group to tell me what I should do with my land), but when Marjo left I got a phone call from a previous naysayer gushing, asking how soon Sonoran could be back.

I sound like a damn commercial, but the community vision day was a huge success. Also, I can’t say enough about Marjo’s energy and vitality – her toughness and humor were perfect for this crowd.

The community feels energized and excited; thank you for providing us with this opportunity. We’re looking forward to learning how Sonoran can be more involved in our future. This is a special time in Missoula County – I feel like we’re on the verge of accomplishing something great.

“Poorly planned growth” motivates donor’s action

Tim Crawford has seen a lot of change in the 30-plus years he has lived in the Rocky Mountain West, and he is not sanguine about all of it. “I’ve seen the ravages of poorly planned growth in Utah, Idaho and Montana. I feel it chases me wherever I go.”

Living in Gallatin County, Montana, for more than 20 years, Tim has been doing his part to protect agricultural open space and the recreational values he cherishes. He has placed significant acreage under conservation easement and has been a dedicated philanthropist in the conservation community.

Tim supports the Sonoran Institute and its community based approach to helping communities grow in a way that protects quality of life, nature and culture. “The Institute is realistic about growth and wants to see it done right… to ensure that growth leaves recreational and renewable resources for the future,” he says.

While discouraged about the failure of streamside setback legislation in the Montana Legislature this session, Tim feels confident that the Institute’s work can help mitigate the impacts of unfettered development along Montana’s fabled waterways.
